PBL Group and Plan

Helping Senior Citizens

Our group is called Juanessaelaordan. Our group is Michaela, me, Juanita and Jordan. We decided to make our topic Senior Citizenship.

We asked Staywell Pharmacy, they said they could help us find elder people who live alone or would benefit from support or visits. We are going to visit Woodcote Retirement Village and will offer support or something.

We decided we are going to help the elderly because the elderly people in rest homes don’t have many friends or family visiting. They are sick and or dying. They might be lonely or bored. They might not get to go out or do things and will be sick of the same sight. Some old people might be left at home and living alone and don’t have the money to afford retirement home or health care that they need.

We will help by fundraising money towards helping them, giving them supplies, baking them food to put in the freezer, and just money to help. We will try to take them places or entertain them. I think even just visiting and talking to them would be cool because we can learn from them and they will just enjoy the company. We can also donate the money to them for medication if they can't afford it.

We will target the elderly people specifically in Hornby and the poor ones who can't afford to go into a retirement village. The ones that already stay in retirement villages we can still reach out to.

Hopefully, the end result is that we changed their life for the better or improved it a bit, even if we've just given them hope. They will be able to afford medicine and not have to strain themselves, they will have a good time and won’t have to sit there bored and lonely. It will overall be supporting the elderly people within our community. It could save someone’s life and they could be thankful for it, and their families also.

I called the retirement home and arranged a meeting with the manager, Liz Hampton. The meeting is at 10am on the 21-11-17. We signed forms and wrote letters for permission. Here is a picture of Michaela calling and the speech I said, but Michaela shoved the phone in my face so I said it, obviously with my own name.

I wrote out our plans, and Jordanlee, Juanita, and Michaela brainstormed.

I wrote out an action plan for our baking and the loose plans.

On Tuesday we signed out of school and walked to the retirement home. We had a short meeting with Liz Hampton. We were introduced to the elderly people at the tables. We sat down and talked to them for around an hour. We made another appointment for next week and made a plan for the next two weeks.

This is a photo of us walking there

This is our group outside the Retirement Village.

The rest of the week we recorded down stuff and planned. I emailed Liz and got permission to bring baking. On the next Monday, me and Michaela walked to her house and baked chocolate chip muffins. Michaela later made no sugar banana muffins for the diabetic patients.

This Tuesday, Michaela brought the muffins with her to school. As a group we walked down to Woodcote once more. After a quick chat with Liz, we were once more introduced to the hall of elderly. We walked to each table and asked if they wanted a muffin or a sausage roll which was prepared by the retirement home kitchen staff. Most wanted a muffin and after we were pointed out the diabetic patients, we served each person and table. After serving, we walked back to school.

The next week we spent making  our presentation and christmas cards. Michaela and I walked back to the retirement home and gave them the cards and thanked them.

Then it was presentations and we were finished

Random writings - All zoos should be shut down

All zoos should be shut down and the animals should be released back into the wild.

Screenshot (610).png

I personally think that zoos should stay open. Half of the reason we have zoos is so that they can nurse sick or injured animals back to health. They give the animals proper care and they are getting better treatment in a zoo. They are safe and fed.

Another reason why zoos should stay open is because people enjoy going to see and learn about the animals. It’s a small fee to get in, and the money goes towards looking after the animals and giving them the help they need. It gives people a place to see how great nature is and admire the animals.

The animals are getting a good life there and the zoo isn’t a cruel place. The animals have their own enclosure where they have warmth, shelter, food, water and heaps of space and company of other friends. They get heaps of love and attention and that is why we should keep zoos.

Why being an individual is more important and better than being popular in high school.

Why being an individual is more important and better than being popular in high school.
Jessania Gallagher

What’s the point in being popular when you can have friends that accept all parts of you? When you are in high school, it is definitely more important to be yourself rather than struggling with being and staying popular among your peers. If you can be yourself in school, and not worry about being popular, it brings genuine friends and less loneliness, less drama, and you won’t feel the need to give up interests just for acceptance and you won’t have to feel fake or trapped.

When you are popular, a lot of the time you will feel lonely and like you can’t rely on the people in your friend group. Deanna Young, from https://thoughtcatalog.com, says that there were times when she desperately needed a friend to be there or a person to call, but not one single person was there. She also says that the benefits of popularity were far outweighed by the feeling of loneliness. If you can be yourself, it means that the friends you do have, even if it’s only a couple, you will know that they love you for you. You will be able to rely on the fact that they will always be there when you need them. Being true to yourself is going to be more helpful for bringing in real friends, not fake ones.

If you have genuine and real friends, it’s going to bring less drama and more peace. When you are in the popular group, there always seems to be a drama going on or people mad at each other, fights within the group. Because you are part of the group, you might often be forced to choose a side, and you will become involved. It would be much more peaceful and easier if you had that couple of good friends because good friends are valuable and can change your high school experience. Even though you will still fight, you are more likely to work it out maturely without the drama. You know that they will listen to your opinion and feelings because they understand you.

A lot of people will do anything to be and stay popular. They can feel pressure to act a certain way to be liked. A lot of people will drop interests or change parts about themselves just to be accepted by their peers.Reading from Deanna Young on her article about popularity and the effects it had on her, she says that “Popularity came with a cost: In order to be well-liked, it meant giving up my true passions and interests in exchange for my peers’ approval”. This means that being an individual and being proud of who you are, you will be better at accepting yourself, and you don’t have to feel guilty about changing yourself to be liked by others. You don’t have to have a fear of judgment and you can be comfortable being yourself around other people. This is just another reason why it's better to be an individual, you won’t have to give up what you love just for acceptance by popular people.

As well as being able to accept yourself, you won’t have to feel fake. You will know that you can be and accept yourself.  A lot of people in the popular group can start to feel fake, especially if they give up interests or start to change themselves to stay popular. People that are popular are usually going through a lot of stuff themselves, and can often turn into bullies, or not very nice people. You are shaped by the people you surround yourself with, and if they are unkind, sometimes that can affect you too.  Popularity also puts you in the spotlight, and if you hang out with bullies, your peers will look at you, and commonly misjudge you, or assume you are similar to the mean people. A lot of teenagers begin to feel trapped and might be afraid to change it because they don’t want to end up alone. But, if you are being entirely yourself and being true to the person you are, you won’t feel fake or trapped, you can accept yourself and if you can, it will be easier for others to accept you as well. It’s about finding the right people to be around.

Being popular has its perks, like more confidence, acceptance by everyone, and you may develop more social skills. Popularity might give you temporary happiness, but Mitch Prinstein, from https://www.teenvogue.com, states that “The kids who had the highest status grew up more likely to suffer from relationship problems, addictions, anxiety, and depression”. This is just another example of why it's more important to be an individual than worrying about popularity. It brings better friends, less drama, less pressure and you will be able to accept yourself and be happy with who you are. It can be hard to be yourself and accept yourself. But that’s normal. High school is about discovering yourself, and popularity won’t matter once high school finishes anyway.

Should fisherman have to pay for every fish they catch? - Writing English

Fishermen should pay for every fish they catch

I don’t know if fisherman should pay for every fish they catch.

I think that they possibly could pay a small fee to fish. You have to pay for plants and fruit and vegetables and meat so why shouldn’t you have to pay for fish? Fishing should be open to everyone for a small cost to fish, but only if they actually catch something. The fee paid could go towards looking after fish or the ocean. Like we can use the money to make sure the ocean water stays clean for them and so that they can breed freely. This will ensure that there will always be a stable amount of fish so that we can stick to using our natural resources and won’t run out.

But then on the other side, if they had to pay a specific amount for each fish it wouldn’t be fair, because fish are different sizes. Some people are poor and they fish because it's a free way to get food and they need it so paying for each one is unfair for them, it helps them. So in some ways, they should pay but otherwise, I think it actually just depends on the situation and person fishing. In some ways fishing should stay a hobby and for those who just genuinely love it and eat the fish happily. So, I don’t know.

Cocoa Mantle Crust Earth Forming

In Science we had to try and recreate the earths crust breaking and mantle something or something and this is what the video showed:
I think plates move around and then it gets uneven so one will rise up and one might sink, then it cracks, and all the movement causes earthquakes, or an eruption of all the lava or something thats underneath and thats what happens.

https://sites.google.com/site/tectonicswebsite/tectonic-processes

Ours worked nice but it didn't crack first like in the video.

The milk bubbling underneath represents the magma, lava stuff.
The cocoa represents the earths crust and how it cracks and formed little islands such in the last picture they represent the continents.

Woodcut Selfies

For our woodcut selfies, we had to use a selfie/picture of us and develop it into art, and draw it, come up with concepts and ideas and meanings behind it. I chose a picture of me and Michaela. I sketched thumbnail ideas of meanings and ways I could go with it.

This is the picture of my page of planning thumbnails. From there I sketched a base plan for the picture, basically copying the selfie and so from there I could develop it.

After this, I chose the idea of how your friends can be prettier, bolder, more confident and talented than you, or even just your peers, and how you can compare yourself to you, and feel overshadowed by them, thats why I decided to make Michaela in front, bigger, bolder darker and thicker features. I put tears and delicate eyes on the girl that represented me, or whatever. Eyes are windows to the soul and I thought if there was expression in the eyes, it had to be better and easier to interpret from a strangers point of view. I made the features overall thinner, lighter and more delicate. I drew another plan of the woodcut, this time adding the ideas behind it and pushing them forward. I did play around with the idea of adding words, and added "SHADOW" lightly at the bottom right corner but it didn't feel right in the end.

Even though this one wasn't exactly better, it was okay. I got my wood and planned out in light pencil what I wanted it to look like, as a base and template. From there I spent a few weeks cutting it out and printing. In the end it didn't turn out too nice, but the first print was okay.

The second picture, I added vivid to the middle of Michealas eyes as it didn't look right at first. Overall I am happy with it.

Gymnastics - PE

Lesson 1:
We went around each one and basically just learned the sequences and got familiar with each piece of equipment, so we could settle into the topic.

Lesson 2:
I learned how to do dip walks and cat leaps on the beam, I learned how to lift myself up and hold on the bars and i flipped myself over. I learned how to do a forward roll on the 2 bars.

Lesson 3:
I worked on my forward rolls, I practiced on the beam, I attempted more bar work and overall practiced the spread of skills and techniques.

Lesson 4:
I attempted a cartwheel, I practiced on the beam, the bars, and the parallel  bars.

Second Piece of Creative Writing

Dodgy Tunnel.png

Writing about the picture (creative writing)

Planning//Ideas:
  • Alone
  • Fire
  • Burning embers
  • Scared

Survival of The Fittest

Looking around, all I could see was darkness. The tunnel was narrow and dim,  empty and abandoned. Why was I even here? It wasn’t like me to go adventuring through deep dark tunnels alone. There was a damp musty smell, and as I inhaled, it was all I could taste. Faint echoes of tapping came from far within. I turned behind me and looked back, but all I saw was endless darkness. I sighed and turned. It was too late now, and just my luck. My only option was to go forward and see what lay ahead.

Stepping over stray litter, I focused on the path ahead of me. There was a trail of foul smelling liquid all the way through the tunnel. Odd, I thought. I figured it was polluted water but how would it even get in here? The walls seemed to seep closer and lean towards me like sly snakes, only there to scare me and play with my mind. My imagination began to run wild and I felt genuine fear. I kept walking ahead though, pushing the thoughts back and myself forward.

Soon enough, there was a change in the air. Suddenly, the musty damp smell disappeared and was replaced by a new crisp smoke scent. It wafted over me and surrounded me, taunting me. I began to run. My old sneakers hit the concrete floors lightly, turning into a rhythmic beat. I reached a doorway. The cornflower blue paint was severly chipped, peeling down, exposing the old wood. I put my hand on the knob. It was rusty and rough, cold on my skin.

As I turned it slowly, a huge blast of air hit me like high wind. I was choked by the strong smell of burning and smoke. What was going on? Why did the tunnel end with this room? I looked around franticly, taking it in. I had so many questions. The room was filled with paper, little notes everywhere. I picked up a small piece of paper that had landed at my feet. It had neat handwriting and said one word, in bold. ‘RUN.’ I held my breath. The fire was creeping closer to me, burning all the notes but I wasn’t scared. I was frozen solid in the doorway, watching.

Millions of questions raced through my mind. What had led me here? Why was there a tunnel underground at school anyway? The roaring and crackling of the fire was loud and overwhelming. The fire had now crept right up to me, a flame now licking at my skin. I moved my arm towards it, as if to touch it. The burning of the orange flame came closer and coiled around me. Just as it thought it had me, I twirled out of its grasp, shut the door on it and sprinted like I never have before.

When I finally slowed from running, after a good five minutes, I turned around. I could see bright burning flames behind me, it was moving faster than rain dropping, chasing me. I then realised that the trail of polluted smelling liquid from earlier, wasn’t water. It was petrol. This was a deliberate fire, and the tunnel wa a trap. I had been set up.

I stopped for a second, to work out what to do. If I stayed here and let the fire get me, they won. If I ran and escaped, I won. I was gasping for breath and I felt the heat of the burning embers crawl over me but I wasn’t going to give up.
After what felt like a lifetime, I reached the opening of the tunnel. The massive rock had been rolled over the entrance again.

“HELP” I screamed.

My throat was sore and dry. My arms were weak and burned but I pushed with all the strength I had left. The rock began to move slowly and it rolled backward. I slipped past the small gap created and pushed it back behind me.

I began to run again. This time, out of my new torturous school. Far away. I thought this school was going to be a nice normal fresh start. Obviously not. He was still out there and wasn’t going away.

Year 10 Social Studies Career Essay Hairdressing

2017 Year 10 Careers Essay
QUESTIONS
1.  Using the research you have just gathered on your chosen job, Explain in an essay..
What are the key aspects of the chosen job or career you have studied this year
  • What Criteria do you need to get into the job/career
  • What skills and qualities are needed to work in this job/career
  • Describe the day in the life of the job/career
Hairdressing Essay
This essay will explain what key criteria, skills and qualities are needed in order to be a hairdresser. It will also explain what a day in the life of a hairdresser is like, and in general information for hairdressing in NZ.

To become a hairdresser, there are many skills and qualities that will be needed to excel this career path. Firstly you need to have a lot of patience and time management skills. When dealing with customers you need to be able to remain calm and do your work quickly and efficiently, and deal with busy stressed customers, meaning you have to have patience with them and the work, and be able to achieve the goal quickly and to a high standard so that everyone is happy and people return to the salon. Sometimes people that come in and want a haircut, colouring, etc, will be short of time and want the job done fast, so if you have good time management skills and patience, knowing how to deal well with the customer, everyone will be satisfied with the end result. So in conclusion to the previous statements, time management skills, patience and being able to complete tasks efficiently are key skills required for hairdressing.

For hairdressing, you also need to have good people skills, such as communicating and have good social skills. The reason for this is because the whole job is centered around dealing with customers and people. It’s a social job, and while you are with a customer, you have to be able to talk and communicate with them to make it an enjoyable experience. Being a hairdresser, you will have to deal with all sorts of people. People in rushes, people who are chatty and just in general, a random selection, so in order for it to be a successful job, you should possess good strong social skills and a friendly chatty manner. If you have these skills, then customers will come back to your salon, and thats how you make money, and everyone is happy! So, good communicating skills are essential for being a hairdresser!

To get into hairdressing you have to train for 3-4 years and gain the basic physical skills of hairdressing. You firstly need to be aware of all the health and safety issues and concerns within your job.  You have to take a training course to perfect the basic skills of hairdressing. These include customer service, cutting hair, colouring, chemical services such as perming and straightening, fashion skills (as in what sort of hairstyles people may want), hair-up work, shampooing and blowdrying hair. Once you have those skills down you can apply for a job. Once you have those skills down you can apply for a job.

There a lot of parts in a day of hairdressing and each day varies. Throughout the day, you might have to answer the phone, write down bookings and contacts. You have to cut/colour/wash etc customers hair. Interacting with the customers, possibly dealing with money. Most salons usually open around 9am to 10am, and sometimes can even close at latest 8pm, but it veries. During the weekdays it would be closer to 5pm. Your whole day will change depending on how busy the day is, and how many customers you get. Sometimes you may have to sweep the floors, or clean up around the salon. That basically makes up the day of a hairdresser, and what skills are used in day of work.

That basically concludes a day as a hairdresser, and what the job is about. There are many skills and qualities needed, and a lot more comes into it than originally thought. It’s an intriguing job with many interesting parts.
