Woodcut Selfies

For our woodcut selfies, we had to use a selfie/picture of us and develop it into art, and draw it, come up with concepts and ideas and meanings behind it. I chose a picture of me and Michaela. I sketched thumbnail ideas of meanings and ways I could go with it.

This is the picture of my page of planning thumbnails. From there I sketched a base plan for the picture, basically copying the selfie and so from there I could develop it.

After this, I chose the idea of how your friends can be prettier, bolder, more confident and talented than you, or even just your peers, and how you can compare yourself to you, and feel overshadowed by them, thats why I decided to make Michaela in front, bigger, bolder darker and thicker features. I put tears and delicate eyes on the girl that represented me, or whatever. Eyes are windows to the soul and I thought if there was expression in the eyes, it had to be better and easier to interpret from a strangers point of view. I made the features overall thinner, lighter and more delicate. I drew another plan of the woodcut, this time adding the ideas behind it and pushing them forward. I did play around with the idea of adding words, and added "SHADOW" lightly at the bottom right corner but it didn't feel right in the end.

Even though this one wasn't exactly better, it was okay. I got my wood and planned out in light pencil what I wanted it to look like, as a base and template. From there I spent a few weeks cutting it out and printing. In the end it didn't turn out too nice, but the first print was okay.

The second picture, I added vivid to the middle of Michealas eyes as it didn't look right at first. Overall I am happy with it.
